Monday November 12th, 2007 - Getting Better

Busy week in rehab with massage, physical therapy, chiro, foam roller, ice, hot tub, etc, etc...

I was true to the plan of riding, running or swimming each dy of the week. Felt good to get back in it. Prolly about 10 hours worth with the majority of it happening on two rides saturday and sunday. Saturday was a mtb ride with several Ironheads up at Browns Camp. That trail is wicked hard and I swear I will ride that son-of-a-bitch one of these days. Prolly not, but I can try. When it gets wet, the roots (are everywhere) are super slippery, makes riding some sections impossible.

And sunday was an easy ride down to OC and back with the Redland/Clackamas River Road loop added in. That was a three hour ride and my legs feel it today. Back was good for the ride a few aches on some longer climbs and power bursts, but overall good.

Todays run was okay. Low abs sore at first but came around, typical of my runs for the last couple months. Ice and IBU afterwards. Hitting PT on wednesday. Chiro was today and feel good.

November 8th, 2007 - Ice Ice, Crack Baby!

Welcome to rehab...the boredom and isolation is on your left, if you need anything, wait until you're done icing... Kinda what I feel think some days.

I'm really not that bored, yet. I'm trying my best to ice, some heat, physical therapy, chiro and massage therapy as much as I can. It's not easy. Yes, I said it, the unemployed guy with nothing but time...there's a time sucker somewhere and I'm going to find it!!!

After two total weeks off (at least 5 pounds gained, sweet!) I'm back to putting in 8-10 hours a week with basically one workout a day, easy. I've also picked up some water core exercises that I am doing, plus daily ab work and every other day plank/side plank (the tiny ab muscles) work. Seems to be helping, back is better, abs are less sore, groin is nearly pain free. A couple more weeks and I should be good to go! I'm 22 weeks out this Sunday.

I've worked the past two days with my father, some property maintenance stuff. We demo'd a front porch and installed a new tongue-and-groove one. Painted it today. Nothing think manual labor. It's good to spend time with my dad. Don't do enough of that.

Diet is coming along slowly. I'll need to start cutting out sugars, more wheat products and start limiting my beer/alcohol consumption over the next couple weeks as I get back into it.

Since, I'm not working, I plan to park the car (since it just cost me $400 today) as of today and see if I can't get through 30 days without using it. I picked up a borrowed pannier rack to throw on the fixie for commuting to the gym, yoga, etc... Should be a good thing. I was thinking of selling it, but that wouldn't be the best thing for me...I'd miss it and as soon as I found a job inthe spring, i'd be pissed I didn't have it. So I resist the urge! I was pissed when I sold this...how sweet would it be to still have it?

My current car isn't as cool, but in VW circles it's a stellar example of a mkII... and I KNEW my GLi emblem had been stolen!!!

I wish I could find my '00 Jetta that I sold to get the bug...I regret that sale as well.

Oct 31st, 2007 - All Hallows Eve and You Can't Train Yet, Well Sorta...

Son-of-a-Bitch!!! My post was just deleted when I tried to change the font and size!!! So, now ya'll get the abbreviated version of my post while I snack on Peanut M&Ms.

On this Hallows Eve I have finally settled on what is ailing me, sports hernia. My PT, Aubree, told me this two months ago, but I shrugged it off for some reason. I was thinking other type of hernia... At any rate, this is the culprit for my back as well. My low back has been overcompensating for the lack of strength in my abs and groin. Fitting, that I know am cancelling not only Cyclocross racing, officially, but also my trip to Clearwater for the 70.3 Championships. My family and I will be out some money, but it's the best thing for me and my goals going into 2008. I've decided to train full time, so now is the time not to go to a race I wasn't crazy about and get injured some more and push recovery back another 3 weeks or more. Take the time now and get it back slowly. I have over 3 weeks to get healthy before I am 20 weeks out. I won't need 6 months to go fast on the bike or swim, but I will for the run, and quite frankly, the run will decide which step of the podium I stand on.

I've taken 2 weeks off, completely now, it's time to start testing out the three disciplines, one each day for a week, easy, real easy. Which is exciting, it will get me out of the house and doing something. It's been hard to actively recover at home. I've been moving stuff for weeks now, I just want it to be done!

Coincidentally, there is a post on Slow Twitch covering Sports Hernias, just posted today!

Back to work on the Ironheads Race Calendar...
